Family Well Being

This curated set of family-level outcome measures are available to researchers to assess family well-being across different dimensions. Each is described by construct measured, disease/condition context, number of items, availability of short forms and subscales, languages, and other relevant attributes. All are available for public use at no or minimal cost, some require permission (see “How to access”). They can be compared by checking the “compare” button.

    Korean Family Relationship Assessment Scale

    Designed to measure relationships within Korean families from a culturally-accurate collectivist family context. Includes items in three domains: family support, family conflict, and family togetherness. Developed based on existing instruments and psychometrically tested among and within families. Designed to capture perspective of any individual or all family members, for outcomes research or clinical insight into family functioning.

    McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD-60)

    Based on family systems approach ("McMaster Model of Family Functioning"), defining family as composed of systems within external systems; developed for use in therapeutic setting for family assessment, with specific focus on families with on member with health condition (can be used in research as well). Includes 7 subscales: problem solving, communication, roles, affective responsiveness, affective involvement, behavior control, general functioning. All family members complete instrument--can be analyzed as composite family score or individual members' scores. The general functioning scale can be used alone as measure of family functioning (FAD-12); a brief, 3-item version of this subscale is available ("BAFSS").

    SCORE-15

    Developed for use in family therapy practices to assess family functioning. To be completed by all family members (age 12 and older; child version for 8-11 years: Child SCORE (Jewell et al., 2013)). Based on a longer version of 40 items deemed unwieldy for clinical use. Development included input from therapists and family members; psychometrically tested.

    Spanish Family Quality of Life Scales

    Designed to measure quality of life of families with one member with IDD. Separate version for family member < 18 and > 18 years of age. Each includes context-specific dimensions: for < 18: family climate, emotional stability, financial well-being, family adaptation, and family resources. For > 18: family climate, autonomy of person with IDD, financial well-being, family organization and functioning, family support for person with IDD. Developed based on existing family quality of life instruments, designed specifically for Spain. Psychometrically tested. (Child version 35 items; adult version 32 items).

    Survey of Family Environment

    Developed to assess family functioning in clinical settings to identify families in need of support. Assesses family's internal and external environments, from perspective of one adult member considering the entire family unit. Items generated from expert opinion; psychometrically tested in large sample of Japanese families with children.
