Summary of development: The HAY- How Are You? (Bruil 1999, le Coq 2000) is a measure designed for 8–12-year-olds which contains both generic and condition–specific elements of HRQoL. The disease-specific asthma measure has generic items like emotional and social function along with clinical measures for severity of chronic illness. There are child and parent versions of this measure, and questions originated from interviews with experts, children and their parents. The first 32 questions of the HAY instrument are generic, and the domains are: Physical Activities, Cognitive Activities, Social Activities, and Physical Complaints. The disease-specific measure contains 8 additional questions for 40 total questions for children with asthma. The additional disease-specific dimensions are: 1) concerns about how to manage illness; and 2) feelings of inferiority they may have because of that illness.
We were only able to find psychometric testing in Dutch populations which was not included here.
